What answers will be accepted with approximate answers?

How does approximate answers work?

Updated over a month ago

For a Text Mission, you can have 3 types of answers:

1. Open answer: where participants can enter any answer and it will be accepted as correct.
2. Exact answer: where participants must match the accepted answer exactly.
3. Approximate answer: where participants must roughly match the accepted answer.

The option to have an approximate answer will only appear once you add in an accepted answer with at least 1 letter. To enable this option, click the check box beside "Accept approximate answers" so that it has a blue check mark.

Spelling mistakes

Approximate answers allow for spelling mistakes. Our platform will accept answers with an added letter, a missing letter or a replaced letter. The answer will have to match the accepted answer by 92% to be accepted as correct.

For example, if the answer was Teddy Bear, these answers would be accepted as correct:

Tedy bear (letter removed)
Teddy Beare (letter added)
Teddi Bear (letter replaced)

Numbers

If you type in a number, it will not enable approximate answers because numbers must match 100%. If you have a number in your answer, your accepted answer will remain as an exact answer and you will not see the option to enable the approximate answer feature.

However, you can include numbers and letters together to allow for an approximate answer. For example:

2 million years

23 dollars
In 1970

Reordered answers

If your answer has multiple words, our system will accept the answer regardless of the order they are entered.

For example, if your answer was:

accepted answer field with red blue and green all in one accepted answer box

These options would be accepted as correct:

Green, blue, red
Blue, green, red
Red, green, blue
Blue, red, green,
Green, red, blue

If you have multiple accepted answers, the participant's answer will only need to match one of them. It cannot match multiple accepted answers.

In the image above, only 'Red' or 'Blue' or 'Green' would be accepted - they are 3 different options for answers. A participant could not submit 'Red, blue and green' as an answer and have it accepted as correct.

How do I see what type of answer my Mission is set to?

You will see the type of answer on the text Mission as a badge:
