What responses will be accepted with approximate responses?

How does approximate responses work?

Updated this week

For a Text Mission, you can have 3 types of responses:

1. Open response: where participants can enter any response and it will be accepted as correct.
2. Exact response: where participants must match the accepted response exactly.
3. Approximate response: where participants must roughly match the accepted response.

The option to have an approximate response will only appear once you add in an accepted response with at least 1 letter. To enable this option, click the check box beside "Accept approximate responses" so that it has a blue check mark.

Spelling mistakes

Approximate responses allow for spelling mistakes. Our platform will accept responses with an added letter, a missing letter or a replaced letter. The response will have to match the accepted response by 92% to be accepted as correct.

For example, if the answer was Teddy Bear, these responses would be accepted as correct:

Tedy bear (letter removed)
Teddy Beare (letter added)
Teddi Bear (letter replaced)

Numbers

If you type in a number, it will not enable approximate responses because numbers must match 100%. If you have a number in your response, your accepted response will remain as an exact response and you will not see the option to enable the approximate response feature.

However, you can include numbers and letters together to allow for an approximate response. For example:

2 million years

23 dollars
In 1970

Reordered responses

If your response has multiple words, our system will accept the response regardless of the order they are entered.

For example, if your response was:

accepted answer field with red blue and green all in one accepted answer box

These options would be accepted as correct:

Green, blue, red
Blue, green, red
Red, green, blue
Blue, red, green,
Green, red, blue

If you have multiple accepted responses, the participant's response will only need to match one of them. It cannot match multiple accepted responses.

In the image above, only 'Red' or 'Blue' or 'Green' would be accepted - they are 3 different options for responses. A participant could not submit 'Red, blue and green' as an response and have it accepted as correct.

How do I see what type of response my Mission is set to?

You will see the type of response on the text Mission as a badge:
